More Dolly Quotes

Hey y'all, extra post this afternoon because I decided that everyone on my weekly sunshine card list is getting a Dolly Parton card this week.  I just wasn't ready to put away my Dolly stamp set yet and all of the quotes in it are fabulous, so I made five quick cards.

I'm really hoping that Lara at The Ink Road will re-release this stamp set and/or better yet a new one with more quotes.  She had a Dolly Christmas stamp set but I didn't get that one since I already had this one.  Anyway, I kept with the butterfly theme since that was Dolly's emblem and now I just have to decide who on my list gets which card.  These are going out today.

I spent the weekend listening to my new Dolly albums (um, I've bought three in the past week to go with the three I already had) and I also watched 9 to 5 for the first time, it's on Disney+.  I'm also working on two Dolly books, Songteller and Behind the Seams, which have been fun.  To honor Tim Curry, I also watched the '90s Three Musketeers where he plays the dastardly Cardinal Richilieu, he always looks like he is having more fun than everyone else when he plays a villain.  Love it.

Dolly's Butterfly

Mornin' y'all.  I found out yesterday that Tim Curry also passed away on Tuesday, but I don't have any Tim Curry stamps so I made another Dolly card.  Here it is:

When the hubs and I went to Dollywood like 20 years ago, they had a professional photographer take your picture when you came in the park and they'd CGI a butterfly on your photo, so I thought a butterfly would be a great choice with that particular quote.  And it made for a cheery card for the Color Hues Challenge:

I used Daffodil Delight and Pumpkin Pie with some Early Espresso for a neutral.  Happily for me, the old Beyond the Garden DSP has both those colors in it and I chose a fun floral to back my butterfly.

I'm pretty sure my Dolly stamp set is more than a year old, but I'm not sure how long I've had it since I hadn't inked it up before now.  However, I do know that Watercolor Wings is eleven years old and the last time I used it was 2019, so it was fun to dust it off.  I used this week's Freshly Made Sketch:

I maybe should have done the smaller butterfly image and added another square element to my card, but I like the big butterfly image.

I bought The Essential Dolly Parton yesterday even though it has several songs that I had on a different album, but my new favorite Dolly song is Dumb Blonde, the first one on the album, and the last one is a cover of Collective Soul's Shine which is pretty cool.  So I listened to Dolly yesterday and then watched Clue last night while I worked on my stitching project.  My first Tim Curry movie was Legend (one of my three favorite movies as a tiny child, along with Labyrinth and The Last Unicorn) and I did think about watching that, but there's a limit to how much Tom Cruise in hot pants I can take, and I just love the sly humor of Clue.  Maybe next I'll watch The Three Musketeers.  I don't think I've ever seen 9to5 either and I don't want to watch Steel Magnolias because I would have to buy Kleenex in bulk for that one.

For Dolly

Well, this isn't the card I thought I would be making yesterday, but here it is:

News of Dolly Parton's death yesterday was totally unexpected.  I've had this Ink Road stamp set for a while but hadn't inked it up yet.  It has the image of Dolly and a variety of quotes, I just chose the one that fit in my die the best.

I used a Color Dare Challenge:

I used Berry Burst, Bubble Bath, and Parakeet Party for colors, though there's a bit of yellow in the floral pattern too.  And here's this week's Atlantic Hearts sketch:

I moved the sentiment a bit because I didn't want to cover up the image of Dolly.

I think I have just three of Dolly's albums in my music library, as I was never much into country music I am mostly familiar with her biggest hits.  The hubs and I did go to Dollywood about 20 years ago, and of course I know about her Imagination Library and philanthropy.  She was an extraordinary woman, and extraordinarily kind.  The world could use more people like Dolly.

Mornin' y'all.  I'm feeling a little slow this morning but I'm hoping that I'll perk up now that I have my first cuppa in front of me.  I do love a good strong Irish Breakfast tea in the morning...or maybe two : )

Anyway, when I made my snake card for last Saturday's Nancy Drew Challenge, I had at first colored in the snake with Granny Apple Green and Golden Glow before I switched to Bubble Bath instead.  But I still had that green and gold snake image all cut out and ready to go, so here he is on a card:

My picture looks a bit dark but that's what I get for taking it when it was all misty outside and right now I'm trying to get this post written before my wireless mouse runs out of batteries so I'm not going to replace it.  Anyway, the AAA Cards Challenge was the perfect impetus to get Mr. Snakey here on a finished card:

And I paired that with the Festive Friday Challenge:

I already had white on my die-cut snake image, so I chose a frame to go around him and then the "SSSmile" sentiment because it made me laugh.  I almost put some embellishments on there, but with the little dots around the snake on top of the polka dot paper I decided I had better leave it alone.

Amusing anecdote time:  This summer, I spent a lot of time in the car driving Ryan to various summer camps which all seemed to be 30 minutes away, so we started playing a game in the car where Ryan would name a letter and then we'd trade off saying words that start with that letter.  Sometimes we'd do fake acronyms just to try to make each other laugh (there was one about a problematic turnip vs. a pretty tiger).  Anyway, whenever Ryan ran out of words, he'd just yell "SNAKE!" and choose a different letter.  Why snake?  I have no idea.  He also said "Why did I play this game with YOU when you know every word in the English language?!" but we had fun with it.

Paper Players: A Card for Ryan

Happy Sunday, y'all, and that means it's time for a new Paper Players challenge!  This week the jubilant Jan has a fun theme challenge for us to kick off August:

Jan wants to see cards for babies or kids, and as it happens I live with a not-quite-so-little-anymore kiddo who will be starting fourth grade this week, so this is a perfect time to make a card to slip into his backpack on that first day.  Here's what I made:

Ryan has been fixated on ducks for yeeeeeaarrrrs but after we went to Yellowstone and then to a nearby wolf sanctuary this summer, he is now also fixated on wolves.  He's read several books about the wolves of Yellowstone and I am all for anything that gets him to enjoy reading.  Anyway, this was also a fabulous opportunity for me to finally ink up my Wild Wolves stamp set from Lawn Fawn that I got last year.  I kinda took inspiration from a shirt that Ryan and I both have:

The Greek Symbol Mystery

Happy August and welcome to the Nancy Drew Challenge!  Today we are on the sixtieth book in the series, The Greek Symbol Mystery:

I still don't like Nancy's hair and face on the arch covers (no shade to Ruth Sanderson, the artist, and the charcoal illustrations inside the book are quite nice) but I do like the background of ruins and Nancy's outfit is pretty good.

We get Nancy, Bess, and George all together on the first checkerboard cover and for once the outfits aren't bad at all.  Actually all three books have pretty good outfits, which is a contrast to last week's mystery.

I think the one on the right is my favorite though, I like the purple and green color combination, Nancy's facial expression, and it feels more active than the other two covers which are rather static.  And I'm pretty sure I have a button-down shirt in a very similar color to what Nancy's wearing on this one (even though it's George who discovers the snake in the book).

Case file:  Not sure why Nancy bothered to go home to River Heights after her mystery in Belgium because she's right back in Europe, this time in Greece.  Maybe she did it for the frequent flyer miles.  Anyway, she's tracking down a missing person, investigating a possibly fraudulent charity, trailing some art thieves, and running afoul of the local law enforcement (which might be a first, usually the cops are falling over themselves to help her with anything she wants).  And in the end someone names a yacht after her, which is a questionable decision given how many boating accidents she's had.

I had to ponder this card longer than the other two for this book, the colors on the arch cover don't really say "ancient ruins" to me but I think I made it work here.  I used More Mustard, Bermuda Bay, and Pretty Peacock; since I don't have More Mustard ribbon (and I really thought I did), I used some Hello Honey ribbon which I thought worked well with the So Saffron in the patterned paper and the card base.

I will say that even though the Winged Victory statue *is* Greek (or is it a Roman copy?  I can't remember), I associate it with France since it's on display at the Louvre (and I've seen it).  The Winged Victory stamp actually says Greece on it though so I started with that and used several other travel-related stamp sets to make a collage.

I had to ink up Sweet November's Mini Medusa for this one!  In the first chapter, Nancy tells her friends, "Last night Hannah dreamed that we'd be greeted at Athens airport by gorgons--monsters with snakes for hair!" and then George says that was probably because Hannah had an appointment to have her hair permed.  I adore this Medusa stamp so I was delighted to use it for this one.

For my colors, I used Shaded Spruce, Azure Afternoon, Golden Glow, and Crisp Cantaloupe to coordinate with the book cover.  Doozy's skin is Crisp Cantaloupe and I did wonder if that looked okay, but the hubs said he liked it so I kept it that way.  I had fun coloring in Doozy's snek friends.

I never thought I'd be saying "Oh how CUTE" about a snek image but here we are.  For a wonder, I did *not* buy the Animal Notes stamp set from C.C. Designs specifically for this challenge, I got it because it's got a dozen super cute rolly-polly animals and the snake happened to be one of them.  Then I perused my Halloween stamp sets for my greeting and it makes me laugh because I am a giant nerd.

I think this cover is the hardest of the three to find; I would like to get one that's in better condition, but I have yet to find one despite being on the hunt for over a year.  At least I have this book even if it is a bit distressed.  I remember this cover especially because it's the one my library had when I was a kid.

When I first read this book as a wee young lass, I never guessed that one day I'd get to go to Greece too; the girls visit Athens, Piraeus, and Corfu, and I've been to all three of those plus several other places like Santorini and Olympia.  Also I have cousins who are half Greek so this book was extra interesting to me for that reason.  Usually I like the travelogue books, but this one feels like they skipped a chapter at the beginning--the missing persons case isn't explained at all, we just find out about it in dribs and drabs through the book and most of what happens doesn't make a whole lot of sense.  I do like the Greek setting though and the covers are all good so I'm giving it one and a half stars.  If you make a card based on the book, leave me a comment as I'd love to see how it inspires you!  I'll see you next week when Nancy finds The Swami's Ring.

The Secret in the Old Lace

Happy Saturday, y'all, and welcome back to the Nancy Drew Challenge!  This week we are on book #59, where Nancy investigates The Secret in the Old Lace:

So, the arch cover is my least favorite of this trio, but I like Nancy's outfit the best out of all of them.  We have a moody gothic cover with a Captain Hook dude staring down at Nancy from a wall with a sinister cloaked figure behind him, but I just don't like Nancy's face and hairdo on this cover.

Next up is the pink checkerboard, we have Nancy and George confronting a phantom in what looks like a dungeon but WHAT in the 1980s is Nancy wearing??  I like the girls' shoes but Nancy's outfit is definitely mockable.

The fashion doesn't get much better on the orange checkerboard cover, this time we have Bess and Nancy.  Bess, why would you put a purple top with maroon pants?  Nancy, what are you smuggling under that ginormous blouse?  The bit with the painting described in the book is good, though.

Case file:  Nancy enters a magazine contest where she writes a fictitious ending to a real-life mystery of a Belgian nobleman who disappeared in I think the 19th century, and Bess conveniently pops up with a present-day mystery for Nancy to solve in (you guessed it) Belgium.  Nancy has to figure out who the present-day heir is to some jewelry discovered in an old house in Bruges, and along the way she really does solve the mystery of the missing nobleman.  Alas, there were no waffles.  Opportunity missed.

So upon perusing my stamp collection, my options for lace were surprisingly slim pickins.  At last I landed on using both Tasteful Touches and Touches of Texture and once again I managed to incorporate an arch for the arch cover, it's becoming a game to design cards around that shape.

My color palette is Purple Posy, Petal Pink, and Concord Crush so even though the card looks like it's got black on it I promise it's very dark purple.  And I included just a touch of Golden Glow to match Nancy's hair; I used it on the flower center.

Before the girls take off for Europe, a criminal breaks into Nancy's house.  She calls Chief McGinnis who rushes right over and then she pulls out her own fingerprinting kit (yeah, I have one of those in my hall closet too, Nancy) and he comments that he'd never seen her dust for prints before.  And that was the PERFECT opportunity to use True Crime Vol. 2 from The Ink Road.

I kept this one a very simple design and went with Melon Mambo, Basic Gray, and Cloud Cover for my colors and we're just ignoring Nancy's outfit now.

So there's a bad guy who pretends to be a ghost running around this house that Nancy, Bess, and George are investigating, but Nancy notices the "phantom" is wearing boots and later she finds a guy wandering around Bruges wearing cowboy boots and of course he's the rightful heir to the jewelry.  So anyway, boots are a recurring clue in this book.

This one was the hardest of the three to come up with a card for some reason.  Super bright and possibly not coordinating colors (sorry Bess, I am not digging your outfit), but I went with Mango Melody, Sweet Sorbet, Tahitian Tide, and stamped the boot image in Night of Navy.  So hopefully that color combo feels cohesive on my card?  Well, not every card can be my favorite.

This book is another travelogue and we learn a few things about lace making along the way.  I had forgotten that this one takes us to Belgium and you know what?  I've been to Bruges!  I did not visit the same museums as the girls did, nor did I foil any nefarious criminal plots, but I can imagine where they were in the book.  Still, I think this one is a middle-of-the-road Nancy Drew book, not terrible but not great either, so I'm giving it two and a half stars.  If any of these book covers (or the story) inspire you, pretty please leave me a comment!  And stay tuned next week when Nancy takes on The Greek Symbol Mystery.

The Flying Saucer Mystery

Happy Saturday and welcome back to the Nancy Drew Challenge!  Today we're taking a look at #58, The Flying Saucer Mystery:

All three colors are sticking mainly to the green and blue side of the color wheel.  The Wanderer arch cover this time around has some lovely greens and it definitely looks swampy.  The two checkerboard covers are so similar to each other but I like Nancy's outfit on the middle book the best.  Also did you notice that Nancy is strawberry blonde on the arch cover, but just plain blonde on the other two?  The artwork was like that last time, too.

Not sure I can pick a favorite cover...I like the arch one this time because horses and green, but I like the composition on the middle one quite a lot too.  So it's a tie between those two, the third one is fine but not as good as the other two in my opinion.  I mean, it doesn't even have the flying saucer on it.

Case file:  Buckle up, y'all, this one's weird!  Carson sends Nancy and the Drew Crew to the Shawniegunk Forest (possibly based on the real-life Shawangunk Ridge National Forest in New York state) to investigate sightings on a UFO in the nearby Dismal Swamp which sounds like a place the Addams Family would go on vacation.  Despite having professional guides, they get lost and lose supplies and some of the horses run off, but they also meet a naturalist and a First Nations man who is a walking bundle of tropes.  Nancy and Ned get on the titular flying saucer and possibly have hallucinations or else trip on swamp gases and in the end Carson calls in a team of scientists and also the Air Force.

Since the arch cover is the only one to feature the horses, I had to make a horse card so here is Nancy's mount, Susan B.  And once again I used the Everyday Arches dies.  I stamped a little forest on the bottom and kept the card pretty simple.

Green is my favorite color so you know I love making a green card too.

Let's not even pretend to act surprised that I bought flying saucer stamps for this challenge ; )  For this card I used a stamp set and matching dies called We've Come For Cake by Trinity Stamps and having grown up in the 80s that "Got milk?" greeting made me laugh.  I wish I had made my ink blend background a bit more saturated but oh well.

I had some fun with this one coloring everything in, but sadly my dark Mint Macaron Blend is totally dried out.  I still had to make my little green men green though.  There were no cows in this book, but we do have Trixie the Wonder Dog and a semi-tamed mountain lion named Kitty.

And now for the third cover card:

After Nancy and Ned hallucinate about their trip on the UFO (Nancy's dream/hallucination/swamp gas trip involves her and Ned being telepathic, wearing weird futuristic suits with no zippers but they did have mechanical wings and BIRD FEET), they wake up to the First Nations man making them chew on some kind of leaf that makes them both feel better, so this was a great excuse to use my new Simply Leaves stamp set.

I used Taken with Teal for my card base to match the book cover, and that led me to the Autumn Meadows DSP which isn't necessarily a direct match for the cover colors but it's reasonably close.  Look closely and you'll see the stripes on the Really Rust leaf are the same as the pattern on the rust-colored edge of Nancy's top.

Finally we get a book that matches the level of bonkers shenanigans we enjoyed in Brass-Bound Trunk and Moss-Covered Mansion, and you know I love the ones that are totally bananas.  And boy, is this one bananas, especially Nancy's hallucination with the telepathy and the bird feet.  I do have to deduct points for the walking trope that is the only non-white character in this book, so I'm giving it four stars.  If you're inspired to make an out-of-this-world card, leave me a comment, and I'll see you next week where Nancy searches for The Secret in the Old Lace.

Mornin' y'all!  I said last week when I did my swimsuit card that I thought of another stamp I could use when I finished that one and guess what I made...

It's Bikinibella!  Man, it's been a while since I used any of the Bellas from Stamping Bella, but she was perfect for the Festive Friday Challenge:

This time, I've got pink, blue, polka dots, bikini, and a beach towel.  One stamp hit half the list, pretty good I think : )  I liked her on the bright colors and fun patterns in the Bloom Impressions DSP so I went with that for my other layers.

Weather Channel with The Paper Players

Mornin' y'all!  Sunday means it's time for a new challenge from The Paper Players...I think the colors I picked last week scared some people away, so I hope lots of stampers join in Jan's new Clean and Simple challenge!

Y'all know my brain is a bit wily, and as soon as I saw this challenge my wily brain immediately said...

TORNADO FROM WIZARD OF OZ!!!  And yes, I do have Wizard of Oz stamps.  Actually, I have Wizard of Oz stamps from multiple companies; the two I used today were part of a sheet (or possibly two?) of unmounted rubber stamps that I acquired years ago and I have no idea who the manufacturer is.  I've used some other stamps from this set on a scrapbook layout before and I have lots more images that I haven't inked up at all yet, plus the stamps from other manufacturers too.  (And as much as I love the original Wizard of Oz, I am Not A Fan of Wicked...I read it when the book came out and I just hated it!!)  Anyway, I had to go with a sepia tone to match the beginning of the movie, and just a teensy bit of blue gingham to call Dorothy's dress to mind.

A Sweet Donkey

Hey y'all, and happy Friday!  I had to have another go at the Paper Players sketch for this week, take a look:

I know lots of stampers are super excited about all the Winnie the Pooh stuff that's out now (both SU! and otherwise) since that work entered public domain in the States recently.  I'll admit that Winnie the Pooh isn't really my fandom (see Star Wars and She-Ra), but if I had to pick a favorite it would be Eeyore, so I did get an Eeyore stamp set from Ink Road...like several years ago...and seeing all the Winnie the Pooh stuff out now finally inspired me to ink it up.  Here's the Paper Players sketch to refresh your memory:

I did look up pictures of Eeyore online to get colors and there's some variation, but the more colorful version pretty much perfectly matches the Hydrangea Hill DSP that came out a few years ago.  I colored Eeyore in with Seaside Spray, Rococo Rose, and Highland Heather Blends.  I am really having some fun revisiting some older DSP lately.

Mystery of the Glowing Eye

Mornin' y'all and welcome to the Nancy Drew Challenge!  Today's adventure is Mystery of the Glowing Eye, and buckle up because it's going to get WEIRD in here:

This cover reminds me somewhat of Crooked Banister, and actually the book does too but we'll get into that.  Crooked Banister's cover is all about hot pink and we do have some hot pink here too with Nancy's shirt, but more red around the creepy eye.  I can't think of another book cover that has words on it like the "warning" and "cyclops" here either, but Nancy's hair is on point.

Case file:  Ned Nickerson's science lab partner at Emerson College goes mad scientist and kidnaps Ned, then sends a remote-piloted helicopter to Nancy's house (so he can fly it like a drone, but it's a full-size helicopter).  Mad scientist also has a spotlight that can temporarily paralyze people?  And rigged up a wall in a museum that can make you stick to it like a magnet?  Crazy stuff.  Nancy and the rest of the Drew Crew try to investigate Ned's kidnapping, but Nancy is distracted by the new lady lawyer in dad Carson's office who has her sights set on Nancy's amateur detective gig AND Carson's affections.  Oh no!

So the villain of the story is obsessed with cyclops from Greek mythology, and he's got that helicopter, but my stamp collection was curiously devoid of cyclops or helicopters.  Actually I was even looking for eyeballs and came up empty, which was surprising to me given my extensive collection of Halloween stamps.  Luckily Whimsy Stamps said "Eye got you, girl" so here's my first card:

Yep, I have eyeball stamps nooowwwww : )  I did just a single eyeball for this card because cyclops, and I colored it in green because Nancy is jealous of the new lady lawyer.  Actually I just recently acquired the Rays of Light background stamp and I just HAD to use it for this book cover.

The eyes have it!  Yeah this stamp set will be making another appearance when we get closer to Halloween, it's so much fun.  I did the same Rays of Light background stamp on this one but discovered I liked it in Real Red ink on Poppy Parade cardstock to match the book cover a little better.

Again with the Rays of Light background, but this time I decided to go with It's a Science for the atomic panel, which is Mango Melody to match Nancy's hair.  Plus I wanted to do a science-y card since this whole mystery started when Ned invented something to do with lasers in science class and his lab partner decided to abduct him and hold him hostage in a swamp.

Like I said, this book is just plain weird, and we don't even have the charm of Robby the Robot from Crooked Banister to make me laugh this time, so I give it two stars.  It's the paralyzing spotlight and the weird glowing eye at the museum that make this feel like a bad 70s sci-fi nightmare instead of a Nancy Drew mystery, but I still had a good time making cards for it precisely because it IS so bizarre.  And now I have eyeball stamps, which is a plus.  If this strange adventure inspires you, please leave me a comment!  And check back next week when Nancy is on the trail of The Secret of the Forgotten City.
